The human brain which weighs about just three pounds (1.4 kg) is the most complex thing we have yet to discover in our universe. Precisely, the most sophisticated computers that we can envision are basic and simple compared to the almost infinite intricacy, elaborateness and complicacy of the human brain. Supposedly, imagine, just one of our brain’s many faculties- imagination.
What is imagination? One dictionary defines it as: ” the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful.” Another dictionary also defines it as: ” the ability to form pictures or thoughts in your mind of things that are new and exciting, or things that you have not experienced.” With that in mind, would you not agree that you use your imagination quite regularly? For example, have you ever thought of, or read or even heard about a place that you have not visited? Did that avert you from picturing it in your mind ? Really, whenever we think of something that we cannot see, hear, taste, or smell, our imagination is at work.
FOOLISH USES OF IMAGINATION TO AVOID.
1. Daydreaming or fantasizing at the wrong time or about the wrong things.
Daydreaming or entertaining thoughts about your life or the future in itself are not wrong. Absolutely, we have ample proof that daydreaming notwithstanding be beneficial. We can fantasize about our accomplished goals or about what we read from the bible, good news we heard and even as about a bright and better future. However, it will be wrong, daydreaming about immoral fantasies, immoral realities, being greedy for what it’s not yours. Be determined never to allow your imagination draw you away from your God!
2. Thinking and having a feel that material riches can provide lasting security.
To get material things are not in itself bad. They are useful and necessary. Notwithstanding, we will surely be disappointed if we begin to fantasize or conjure that real security and happiness result from them. Think about this wise proverb: “The wealth of the rich is his fortified city; it is like a protective wall in his imagination.” Reflect for example, what happened when over 80% of Manila, Philippines, was flooded by torrential rains in September 2009. Did those with many material things escape? A rich man who lost much said, “The flood was a great equalizer, bringing sufferings and difficulties to both the poor and rich.” Moreover, It may be simple to imagine that material things brings true and lasting security and protection. But the truth of the matter is that they do not.
3. Bothering yourself unnecessarily on things that may never happen.
Do not be overly anxious. Being a chronic worrier requires an active imagination. The worrying about imaginary problems, problems that have not even evolved or that may never occur can easily waste a lot of energy and no doubting leads to anxiety. Such anxiety can lead to discouragement, health problems, even depression. So, it’s important not to worry excessively. Always deal with each day’s concern as they come. Live a day at a time.
DISCREET USE OF IMAGINATION!
1. For seeing dangerous situations and avoiding them.
Note that imagination is the engine of your thoughts. Your feelings are the fuel. We should be shrewd and think ahead. By using our imagination, we can ponder over the possible consequences of our decisions before we even make them. If as an example, you are invited to a social event, how could your imagination assist you to make a wise decision about whether to attend or not? After considering such factors as who will be attending, the exact number of people attending, and when and the venue, it will be held, then think; ‘ What probably may happen there?’ Can you realistically imagine that the gathering will be wholesome and in harmony with Bible Principles? This process can enable you to visualize the event in your mind. It’s important to use your imagination prudently to make wise decisions that will help you to avoid tempting, and spiritually harmful situations.
2. Rehearsing mentally how to handle difficult problems.
Imagination also involves the “capability to face and deal with a problem.” Suppose you have had a misunderstanding with someone. How will you approach him/her to restore peace? There are factors to consider. What is his style of communication? When would it be best to talk about the problem? What appealing words and charming tone of voice would be best to use? When you utilize your imagination and put it to work, you can mentally rehearse the best ways to fix the problem and choose the one that you feel will be the most effective and well- received.
No doubt, a thoughtful approach to best handle such a difficult situation will help promote peace. Definitely, that is undoubtedly a good use of imagination. Wise use of Imagination will take you anywhere and everywhere around the globe!
